The One Tweet That Captured My View of Politics, Trump and Jesus

Occasionally, I see something on social media that captures what I think about an important topic.

The tweet below is one of those items. It (briefly!) unpacks the Biblical relationship between politics, Christianity and Trump. Yes, there’s more that can be said - but it’s an excellent summary:

While some Christian commentary errs on the side of Christians must not support Trump, on the one hand, or comes perilously close to viewing Trump as a pseudo-Messiah on the other, Strachan draws us back to what the Bible says about politics:

  • There is only one Messiah, and He doesn’t reside in the White House

  • Politics is not the most important thing in life. But that doesn’t mean it’s unimportant.

  • Christians must view politics through the lens of the Resurrected and Ruling Lord Jesus Christ, the Ultimate Ruler.

If we stick to the Bible’s view - summarised in the above tweet - we’ll avoid the twin pitfalls of triumphalism and despair. We’ll avoid losing our heads in the cut and thrust of worldly politics. Instead, we’ll be filled with hope and realism. We’ll put our ultimate hope in Jesus, who will never fail us. And we’ll be realistic about what politics can (and can’t) achieve.

That’s a perspective we need to hold to in today’s maddening world.
